There are more and more people practicing yoga and a lot of essential oil users; if you know how to combine the two, the benefits will double. Ed Dailey, an American yoga instructor who specializes in teaching aroma yoga, was interviewed by Lianhe Zaobao during the new class this month, explaining how the two complement each other and provide practical advice.

Yoga and fragrances help to improve physical and mental health, and combine them to be more effective.

Ed Dailey, a US yoga instructor with nearly 20 years of teaching experience, started using essential oils in yoga classes 10 years ago and found that it was helpful to the students. Currently, he is a senior global mentor of the essential oil brand Young Living. In addition to direct classes, he also trains other yoga instructors around the world to teach them how to use essential oils in yoga classes.

Daley admits that there are not many studies on fragrance yoga, but from the practical experience, it is absolutely beneficial to the students.

He said: "Yoga itself has a strong effect, and the essential oils, combined with the two, can make a great spark."

Basic principles of fragrance yoga

How does fragrance yoga work?

The first is to use the essential oils and diffusers to make the practice room full of fragrance. Doing so helps to relax and let the students enter the state faster.

The second method is to drop the essential oil at the pulse point and accelerate the spread of the essential oil fragrance.

In addition, Daley likes to drop the essential oil on the left hand palm of the student. Simply rub your palms and gently cover your nose with both hands to inhale the fragrance in a more direct way.

Daley said: "As long as you choose the right essential oils and cooperate with appropriate yoga exercises, you can practice more deeply and the overall experience will add points."

Daly generally uses three to four essential oils in each class, depending on the needs of the students. He stressed: Just as yoga practice varies from person to person, fragrance yoga also needs to be adjusted according to individual circumstances. In addition, in order to practice aroma yoga in the safest situation, students should carefully select the yoga instructor and essential oil brands to ensure that the plant variety from which the essential oil is extracted must be identified and certified, and not adulterated.

He added: "A good yoga instructor will let the students learn how to practice fragrance yoga outside the classroom, so that they can integrate fragrance and yoga into their daily lives and benefit more."

Daly came to the new class this month, and many of the students in the class were first exposed to fragrance yoga. One of the trainees, Chen Jianru (28 years old), said: "The number of practiced yoga has started to decrease recently, but I have tried fragrance yoga, I feel that my practice is deeper and I re-ignite my interest in yoga. I decided to start using essential oils during practice."

Practical advice on fragrance yoga

There are several types of yoga movements, and Daly will choose the appropriate essential oil according to the action category.

Strengthening: wintergreen, rosemary, basil

Grounding: frankincense, trees such as fir, pine, and myrrh

Restorative: citrus, mint

Daley said: "Students may wish to explore on their own, bravely try different essential oils and choose the fragrance that suits them best."
